Become the next Tiger

This summer I joined a golf league. Although the average age of the ladies on my league is pushing 50, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of fun I've been having.

Every Tuesday afternoon, I throw the clubs in the car and go the Hickory Hill golf course on Route 31, where thirty or so women are hacking their way down the fairways for a few hours. Experience is definitely not needed. We have one lady who must be at least 65 still swinging away laboriously, so there is no need to feel self-conscious. I always tell myself: "if she can do it, so can I."

All the ladies walk the nine holes. "Carts are for sisseys!" we say (or for the men). We carry our beer cans with us as well as our clubs, because half of us are there for the arobic exercise as well as the love of the game.

Every once in a while you'll hear elated screaming from a green, meaning someone actually made a par, or an amazing Tiger-like put just fell in the hole.

And each week, we meet after league at one lucky lady's house for wine and snacks and rehash the day's swings. Women from all walks of life, just enjoying the sunshine, breeze, beer and fun of golf.

Find a golf league near you. Or a volleyball team or raquetball club. Make some new friends that you never thought you'd make, maybe even outside your age bracket. You'll be glad you did.
