A prolific draftsman and painter, Juan Alberto Cruz’s work addresses the artist’s relation to contemporary society while redefining abstract art as a vehicle to express the inner self. Inspired by Cuban Alejo Carpentier’s novel The Kingdom of This World (1950), which centers on the eighteenth century Haitian revolution and Magic Realism in Latin-American literature, Cruz’s site-specific mural for The Window Projects pays homage to the Afro-Cuban movement and, through its references to artists such as Wilfredo Lam and Alejo Carpentier, celebrates the African origins of art in our cultures.
